A bit of background—

who am I and how I can help you

When I started my role as an assistant professor, some days felt as if I was dropped in the deep end of a pool and learned how to swim then and there. It could have been anything from finding teaching approaches that best worked for me and the subjects I covered; to balancing all aspects of my practice, to working within academic institutions. Within a few months, I was promoted with more administrative responsibilities including overseeing a program.

In my role as Director of a BFA Graphic Design program, I look over the curriculum, while looking after our faculties too. I started this platform to help other young faculties no matter where they are. I believe we can support and empower each other to advance our pedagogical practices and share our resources with the designers who like to pursue teaching positions.

Concept—Practice is for you if...

  • You’re thinking about combining theories with professional studio projects both in academia and your commissioned work.

  • You have recently graduated with a Master's degree and you’re interested in teaching in higher education.

  • You’re a creative person and have been practicing for a couple of years; now you want to explore teaching part-time and working with students.

  • You’re an educator who often finds herself balancing multiple roles and responsibilities in solitude or within a very small team: By day you are addressing issues from every-day practices with the students, to developing a robust, inclusive, and diverse program, while maintaining great relationships within and outside of your academic institution. By night you are working on your own research and practice.

Being a faculty, working on your classes, and doing the best for the students while planning a diverse program can be a lonely life at times. It could take over all your practice. In addition to that, not being connected and knowing the efforts of others on the same boat in different institutions could mean not sharing the same research and resources. Design isn’t similar to many other fields, especially in science, where you would publish the abstract of your research and work with other researchers around the world. Ask how many design faculties are working on decolonizing their programs, or including diverse resources for their students. How many of them do you think are connected to each other and working together outside of a conference or a virtual symposium?
